Starting out with OG

by joannabanana » Thu Sep 23, 2010 3:51 am
I just received the OG in the mail so I'm keen to get started on it. I'm looking for advice for how best to use it. Should I just go through the questions in each section in order, or is it better to mix them up? Are the questions ordered by difficulty? I'd like to have a mix of difficulty in my practice, so if they are in order what's the best way to do the questions?

Thanks!

Joanna the first thing is that you have to plan how you are going to study for GMAT. Depending upon the time you have you can devise a plan accordingly. Have a look in the BTG forums there are superb action plans for the study for different time scales.
Oh yeah for starters you can begin by taking the diagnostic test in the OG. Note down the questions where u went wrong, questions which u could not solve or took time to solve them. this way u will come to now of your weak points.
then u can accordingly attack ur weak areas first then go for fine tuning your strengths.

I have a rough plan right now, but am going to take my first practice CAT this weekend and then fine tune the plan. My rough plan is to read through the sections in the Kaplan Premier book to learn concepts and strategy, do questions in Kaplan and then do some questions from the OG each night. After about a month or so, once I feel that I have the concepts down I'm going to switch to mostly doing questions from the OG.
I was looking for a more specific answer to my question of whether the questions in OG are in order of difficulty or not. Like I said, I'll want to do a chunk of questions from OG each night and would like a mix of difficulties. So if they're all in order then I'd like to know what the best way to mix them up is.
Thanks!

joanna i have gone through quite a few threads in BTG forum. The experts have said that the questions in OG become a bit tougher towards the end but, then again it depends on person to person. Some people might find the first 50 questions of OG tough.
So all depends upon how much math concepts are you familiar with. For me 99% of the questions were easy. A few took more time than other but that was because i had no touch with studies for couple of years.
Now there is a 60 day beat the gmat study guide which u can subscribe to help you out with the solving of OG and Kaplan. I myself have been following that. It covers all the topics of GMAT section-wise.

Cool, thanks, that is useful info.
I've signed up for the BTG 60 day plan too and have been getting the emails. I haven't been following it though since I signed up for it after I had already been studying for about 2 weeks so I didn't want to start over from the beginning with the emails. After this weekend when I do my first CAT and assess my strengths and weaknesses a bit more (though I already have a good idea of where I am, at least in terms of Quant) I'll probably go back through some of the emails, esp the ones that deal with my weaknesses.
Amazing that you find "99% of the questions easy"! I find about 50% of them easy, 25% ok, and 25% killer! I'm starting to get a good idea of which quant topics I have trouble with, so I'm going to start focusing on them soon.
I've only done a few days of studying on verbal, so I have no idea where I stand there!

joanna just between u and me, i myself couldnt spend much time on the mails because i was clearing most of my other concepts as far as quant is concerned. I have planned to give my gmat around december so have plenty of time with me. Actively participate in the forum questionnaire as well. I love the quant section a lot. As far as verbal is concerned, i am pretty confident about comprehension. Sentence Correction is ok and I am dead scared of the Critical Reasoning. I had performed not so good in the diagnostics of the OG.
