Prep Courses

by isisalaska » Mon Mar 05, 2007 8:56 am
I am thinking about taking some prep courses like Kaplan. It is $1,300 for 6 weeks, 2 hours on Sundays. I am ok in the verbal section but I need to improve in the quantitative one. Will these courses help mke? I have done pretty much all the books and many questiosn and tests so maybe I need something else...any advice, experience, etc?

A prep course may be a good option for you--it's definitely a different approach from your self study from before.

I'm probably biased, but I highly recommend going through Manhattan GMAT. I've sat through a few different prep courses, and Manhattan GMAT has impressed me the most thus far. I think this course will do a lot to improve your verbal and quant.

When do you plan on taking your GMAT again? Just want to mention that there is a BIG GMAT scholarship competition taking place in May on this website...I can't announce yet what the prizes will be, but let's just say Manhattan GMAT made a incredibly generous donation to this competition.

I would recommend Princeton Review over Kaplan. The price is less, I think (can't remember; it's been a while), but the materials are awesome and they're unique to the course. Plus PR gives you the official guide. Kaplan doesn't use it, and their materials can be found in any bookstore. I am a big fan of PR.

Most of the big companies also offer free "info sessions" that let you learn more about that company's program. (It is a marketing session, of course, but I know for ours we really do spend most of the 2 hours talking about the test and doing questions. I only spend about 15 minutes talking about our courses.)

I highly recommend attending the free sessions of any company in which you're interested so you can decide which one is the best fit for you. We (ManhattanGMAT) hold in-person sessions in San Francisco, LA, Chicago, Boston and Manhattan (of course:)). We also hold live on-line sessions frequently - all you need is a computer with high-speed internet connection. (You're not watching a tape for these - you are attending a live virtual session with a real person presenting and answering questions on screen.)

And I'm holding an in-person free session myself this Thursday in San Francisco - come and say hi! See our web site for details and to sign up.
Please note: I do not use the Private Messaging system! I will not see any PMs that you send to me!!

Thank you for all your advices. I am traveling in LA this week so unfortunatly I will not be able to attend the live session Stacey.

Eric, I am taking the GMAt again in June. What do I need to do for participating in the GMAT scholarship?

I am planning to attend the two free section for Kaplan and PR. But, by reading the overview in the Kaplan website it seems that Kaplan is for those who are already scoring 650 and want to score in the 700s. Well, this is not my case at all (I wish) so I might have to go with PR. Unfortunattly where I live (St. Louis) ManahhtanGMAT is not been offered. I learn better by actually going to class, that's why I am planning to seat in a prep course.

So, am I right about PR?

Manhattan GMAT does offer online classes as well. I've heard good things about those classes as well.

I totally understand your desire though to go to an actual class. If I had to compare PR vs. Kaplan, I would lean more towards PR.

This year's GMAT scholarship competition will be somewhat similar to last years, but with better prizes. Check out the Beat The GMAT Scholarship section of this Forum.

The main requirement will be an essay(s) submission...

Again, details will be released in April.
