no matter how i slice this one, i still can't seem to get the correct answer. in what order should i be doing the operations?

There are some tricky concepts involved here. At Magoosh (https://gmat.magoosh.com/plans), we have well over 200 video lessons explaining all the difficult math & verbal concepts you will need on the GMAT. If you want to learn more about simplifying radicals and multiplying by the conjugate, my recommendation would be check out Magoosh.
