8 games and maximum points

by pareekbharat86 » Sun Nov 10, 2013 2:59 am
Team A and team B competed in 8 distinct consecutive events. The team winning the nth event was given n points, there were no other teams competing, and there were no ties in any event. Did team A receive more points than team B?

(1) Team A won the seventh and eighth events and at least one other event.

(2) Team B won the third, fourth, and fifth events.

OA is
E[
.

IMO it should be B.
The explanation says that (2) doesn't mention who won the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th & 8th events! Isn't that just cruel?
Thanks,
Bharat.

Bharat,
OMG this problem is super cool.
Even I too went for option B. Later realized that they did not mention about 1,2,6,7,8th events. :( Which can won by either Team A or Team B. Hence we cant' say.

Thanks for posting the problem.

Uva.

Hi Bharat,

In this question, it's important to note that there are 8 events, with "point values" of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Each event was won by either Team A or Team B. The question asks if A's total > B's total? This is a YES/NO question.

First off, there are 36 possible points that can be won, so we have to account for THAT in our work.

Fact 1: A won 7, 8 + AT LEAST one other event...

So, we know that A won AT LEAST (7+8+1) = 16 points, but could have won more.

If A = 16, B = 20 and the answer is NO.
If A = 36, B = 0 and the answer is YES.
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

Fact 2: B won 3, 4 and 5....

Right now, we know that B has (3+4+5) points AT THE MINIMUM.
It's possible that B won some OTHER events though...

If B = 12, A = 24 and the answer is YES
If B = 36, A = 0 and the answer is NO
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, we know...
A is at least 16
B is at least 12
BUT there are 8 more potential points to be won...
We don't know who won them though....
Maybe A wins them ALL (and the answer is YES); Maybe B wins them ALL (and the answer is NO)

Final Answer: E
