Profile Evaluation - INSEAD

by DIVV » Fri Dec 18, 2015 4:06 am
I would like you to please give me an independent, honest opinion to my query.
I graduated in 2014 in electrical engineering with 83%. I am an entrepreneur. I and my dad started an engineering firm which gives engineering consultancy services. Within a year, we reached break-even and then converted our firm into a pvt ltd company and now I am one of the working directors. I have learnt quite a lot since I handle both technical and commercial aspects.
I am planning to do MBA from INSEAD as it will help me in managing the company better. With my profile do I even stand a chance? I have 17months as of now. But I am just planning ahead as it will help me prepare myself for the whole process including GMAT.
I am planning to apply for Jan 2017 intake
GMAT mock tests I scored 680 without any preparation. So I think I might manage 720+ if i prepare well.

Hi DIVV,

In short, if you manage to get 720+ in GMAT, you stand a chance at INSEAD. You've a less-common work experience (entrepreneurship/ family business), and B-schools definitely look for diversity in building their class.

Your work ex is less, but that's not an issue if you've learnt things and grown professionally in that period, if you've instances of leadership, and so on. Those experiences will form the foundation of your application, and if you can articulate them well within, of course, the constraints of questions asked, then stand a chance.

Second, in case of applicants with your professional background, choice of recommenders can be tricky. You can't have recommenders who are related to you. So, think about whom to have as your recommenders, as the process can take time. Choose someone whom you've worked with (could be a customer, vendor, an independent board member, or an investor) and who can write about you with examples.

hi Divv,

We believe that are currently not ready to apply to INSEAD. Couple of reasons :

1) INSEAD expects either strong international experience or very diverse profile. While you can show diversity with your family business but you will have to bring out your contribution to family business. Merely stating family business wont help. We think you can manage this well but you will have to ensure that you link current experience with post MBA goals.
2) INSEAD expects 4+ years of experience and rarely takes applicants with lesser experience.

I think you should add an year of experience and then apply. Aug / Sep 2017 intake is best suited in your case.
