Hi,

I took GMATPREP CAT recently and scored 560 and one day before that I took MGMATCAT-4 but untimed (as I wanted to know whether I know the content or not. Before that I scored 580 <timed full length with essays>) and scored 680. My target score is 680-700. My GMAT appointment is on july 3rd 09.

Can anybody please suggest what should I do to improve my verbal score? I made 5 SC mistakes, 5 CR mistakes, 8 RC mistakes in GMATPREP(V23). I am using MGMAT SC, OG11, OG verbal review, powerscore CR bible.

With the limited time that we have at hand I would suggest that you go over your mistakes that you made in the GMATPrep (even go over the ones that you were not sure) and analyze. Spend atleast 5-10 mins per question dissecting the topics tests and what was the reason that prompted you to pick the wrong answer.

Now take that insight and go back to your books. For SC - the manhattan gmat is an excellent source to go back to. Review the concepts once again, read the chapter, take notes on the pointers and do a few questions from the OG pertaining to the subject area. Do this until you have full confidence that you have nailed the topic.

I suggest you to spend 80% of your time on the verbal section as this is clearly your weak area and work your way backwards from the practice test.

To summarize - Analyze your mistake and Review them!!

Good luck and remember - Never Loose Hope!!!

hk,
thanks for replying...I noticed one more thing that I made many initial questions wrong and that may be the reason of extremely low verbal score. this time I'll try to focus more on initial questions. I have one more query that I have many other books like kaplan800, kaplan verbal etc..is this advisable to practice with these books or only OGs are sufficient? Also is this advisable to do 1000 series..I personally do not want to go for these questions as I want to practice with standardized material only.

Well there are a lot of mixed opinions about the first 8-10 questions. Some say they are more important and that you need to concentrate more on them while other argue that every question is as important as every other. IMO do not spend more time exclusively on the initial questions. I stick to one plan - try to nail the easy ones and if the question is really tough, try to eliminate as many as possible and then take a guess. Trust your instincts.
If you spend more time on the initial ones you will definitely run out of time on the last ones. Its upto you to make a decision.

Regarding the books - Official guide should be your primary practice source and your study material. Other books are good for practice. I like the Kaplan Verbal book for Verbal practice.

I personally, stay away from "the 1000 questions" series as I'm not 100% sure about its source and about some of its answer explanations.

It seems that you're working with good resources. Try to analyze what trips you up and adjust your thinking/processing accordingly.
