"the ratio" Vs "a ratio"

by goelmohit2002 » Tue Jun 23, 2009 3:17 am
Hi All,

Can someone please tell...is there any difference between "a ratio" and "the ratio" as far as GMAT is concerned. For e.g. in the below sentence will it make any difference.

1. A recent review of pay scales indicates that, on average, CEO’s now earn 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, "a" ratio that compares to 42 times in 1980.

2. A recent review of pay scales indicates that, on average, CEO’s now earn 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, "the" ratio that compares to 42 times in 1980.

Thanks
Mohit

If you say "the ratio" is something specific, or something already mentioned. Like a subgroup.

If you say "a ratio" is something very general.

IMO Gmat rarely test this, the sentence MUST have other mistakes.
