E says that as if human growth sleeps
Isn't D and rest of the choices saying the same thing?
Subject here is hormone itself..
I too vote for E. I also feel D changes the intent of the author. "during waking hours" suggests as if hormone is secreted when a person is about to wake up..

I'm no satisfying expert...just a hungry student, asleep and awake are adjectives, so as it pertains to "E", it doesn't make since to have them as adjectives when they should be nouns.

"D" looks parallel during sleep to during waking hours. It wouldn't be parallel if we had it "during sleep" to "during wake".

I would go for D as well...In E as explained by Blindvision...asleep and awake are adjectives...and when should follow noun...or pronoun....and when is used as an adverb here and should modify noun...

D is parallel...

IMO D:
A: Wrongly implies that the growth hormone is awake
B: It seems to compare "hormone sleeping in higher concentration" to "hormone sleeping in waking hours"
C: It seems to imply that the hormone is sleeping and waking
D: correct. Here sleep and waking hours are noun.
E: Here hormone seems to be asleep and awake.

Hope this helps
