Hey,

I need your advice about changing jobs during the application season.

I will be applying in the Round 2 of most schools and have planned my strategy accordingly.
I have 4 yrs of work experience in the Manufacturing sector in the same company.
Recently, I have come across this amazing Job opportunity in the same sector- Manufacturing but in a much better company.
With a new job, I will be able to learn and work in a new set of environment and get to see new systems and a whole new set of opportunities.

Having said that, can you please tell me how this is viewed by the admission committees?
Will it be a negative in my application process/ interview process? Considering Round 2 application, I would have just completed 2-3 months in my new job or will it strengthen my position?

Hi Enigmaparanormal--

It sounds like this opportunity would help you progress your career - and the adcoms always like to see that. In fact, if it's a significant promotion with new responsibilities, it could strengthen your candidacy.

Of course the real issue is, can you ethically take a new job knowing full well that you may be leaving for bschool within the year? You'd need to figure out how to present this information to the new employer - it would be sorta lame to do the bait-and-switch.

The other reality of course is that you may not get into any MBA programs, in which case the new job would be a very good place for you to be, to continue to grow your career.

In terms of the MBA apps themselves, as long as you can explain your decisions and why you made the change, the adcoms will typically receive it well - it should not be perceived as a negative at all, particularly since you have strong continuity in the past, with four years at the previous company. Just make sure you can talk about WHY you made the change, in the context of how did it set you up even stronger for pursuing your future goals. It needs to mesh with your entire application strategy. But it sounds like it would. In which case there should be little downside. If you've already submitted an app, then this is something you could explain during the interview; you'd need to cover it in the main career essay for any apps you submit subsequent to the job change (or, possibly, in an optional essay, though this seems to be the type of thing that should be presented front and center in the main essays).

Just make sure you handle the tricky part about disclosing your apps and intent for the MBA to the new boss. That could get a little nasty otherwise.

Wishing you the best on this!!

If it's a higher position/a bigger company/ more responsibilities and/or a better salary, it can only help.

Thanks EssaySnark for the in-depth analysis. Looking at the opportunity at hand I don't think it's gonna be a big problem putting my story across.

Thanks Jon, very precise but to the point. Will weigh my options keeping these perspectives in mind.
