With adjustments for inflation,the relative cost of welfare benefits has been dropping since 1973, resulting in the welfare program now costing about 3 billion real dollars less to implement than in 1973

(a)resulting in the welfare program now costing about 3 billion real dollars less to implement than
(b)resulting in the welfare program now costing about 3 billion real dollars less to implement as
(c)resulting in the welfare program now costing about 3 billion real dollars less to implement than it did
(d)and as a result the welfare program now costs about 3 billion real dollars less to implement than it did

In such comparison structures the verb in the latter part is usually ellided.
The problem here is that 'did' must stand for a verb, while 'costing' is not really a verb.

Correct idiom is "as a result of". Of is missing, even that is can correct.

Here you want to show the result of an particular activity hence as a result is fine
However if you want to show the reason for a particular result
as a result of should be used.

Issue with C is 'now costing about'. If we make use of infinitive then it should be ok I guess.
(c)resulting in the welfare program now to cost about 3 billion real dollars less to implement than it did.

Any thoughts ?

:arrow: The official explanation says that the verb resulting cannot be used here because it does not have a real subject.Therefore "and as a result" is more correct.

Hi All,

I couldn't differentiate between C&D with any grammar rules. But based on the context, it appears that the drop in relative cost led to X. This requires a cause-and-effect kind of a sentence and D fits better for this scenario.

As for C, "Resulting" modifies the previous clause, which is not intended.

Please correct my understanding.

What I could spot in C is the use of a comma. A comma is used when you separate independent clauses with a co-ordinating conjunction. The option in C is not an independent clause whereas D is an independent clause - As a result....

I agree with the idiomatic approach of - "as a result of", but none of the options have that usage.
