Pl. evaluate my profile

by BRAHAMAN » Mon Jun 21, 2010 11:23 am
Hi,
I am planning to apply for one of the top ten EMBA programs in the US such as (Wharton,Kellogg,UCLA,USC,Haas,Michigan). I will be 43 next year and I understand that I will probably be on the higher side of the age scale. I graduated in 1991 with a degree in Electronics Engineering from one of the best engineering schools in India. I worked in India for about 5 years for a top consulting company and then in the US for a leading software company for about 10 years in consulting and product development. Started off as Sr Consultant in their Services Business and few years later transitioned to their Product Development. I progressed from Principal Engineer to Engineering Manager. 2.5 years ago I quit to start my own services business, did ok in the beginning and then because of the market condition I could not line up projects and decided to join a Distribution and Logistics company as IT Architect. Though this is a high profile role,I interact with VP,CFO and Sr Mgmt of the company on a regular basis on various IT initiative and enjoy higher visibility than i have in my previous company, for some reason I feel that Title could be a bottleneck. During the last two years I have successfully executed two huge IT implementation across geographical boundaries. Directed consultants and contractors for the project. I got my Sr. Mgmt excited about my interest in EMBA program and they have offered full support in terms of recommendation and time-off from work to attend classes.

Given that, what are my chances to stir interest in admission committee for one of the top EMBA programs? To increase my chances i will definitely consider 2/3-tier schools as well, however, to get my dollars worth and time spent my first option would be to put in as much as effort i can to gain acceptance into one of the top schools.

Any other suggestions as to which top rank schools I have higher chances, I live in Santa Rosa ~30 miles north of San Francisco and I don't mind commuting or flying every month or once every two weeks

Thanks so much
Arthur

Arthur you sound like a good candidate for a top EMBA program. Leadership, experience and achievement becomes the most important ingredients at that level, and since EMBA programs do not have to submit their stats for rankings purposes, they are usually more lenient on requirments. Also, since EMBA programs are revenue-generating programs for schools, they will bend over backwards to make a place for you if you seem qualified. I helped several folks get into EMBA programs last year including Wharton, GA Tech, HAAS and Fuqua. I encourage you to aim high and then put together a compelling package which showcases your deep and broad experience. Good luck.

Have you considered Schools in California? The thing is - even if you do fly out - your long term benefit is in doing EMBA from around your area because you'll be further exposed to a network of like-minded people. This network later can become a support group or your business group - you never know - depends on your long term goals. All those classes, group discussions, case studies and projects build a close community. Also - you'll have access to Pacific Rim Network - all in all its a very good school to get your degree from - without sacrificing too much time in flying out etc etc. So - definitely think about that option as well. After all - you will be investing your dollars and time so you want to reap long term benefits as well.
