The results of the company's cost-cutting measures
are evident in its profi ts, which increased 5 percent
during the fi rst 3 months of this year after it fell over
the last two years.
(A) which increased 5 percent during the fi rst
3 months of this year after it fell
(B) which had increased 5 percent during the fi rst
3 months of this year after it had fallen
(C) which have increased 5 percent during the fi rst
3 months of this year after falling
(D) with a 5 percent increase during the fi rst
3 months of this year after falling
(E) with a 5 percent increase during the fi rst
3 months of this year after having fallen

OA is C

Can someone please explain what is the rule for comma + with construction (D). I understand that with is an adverbial modifier and modifies the entire previous sentence, especially verb.

I thought FANBOYS are conjunctions and with is a preposition.

Comma +with is an adverbial modifier. Can someone confirm this?

Yes you are correct WITH is a preposition , I am not sure about comma + with is an adverbial modifier or not.

As far as the sentence is concerned you dont need to go to that lengths if you can find simpler errors.


The results of the company’s cost-cutting measures
are evident in its profi ts, which increased 5 percent
during the fi rst 3 months of this year after it fell over
the last two years.

(A) which increased 5 percent during the first
3 months of this year after it fell [IT(singular ) here seems to be referring to profits (plural) discard A.]

(B) which had increased 5 percent during the first
3 months of this year after it had fallen [same mistake repeated here discard B]

(C) which have increased 5 percent during the first
3 months of this year after falling [correct , have increased Present Perfect indicting the profits increased in past and still increasing.]

(D) with a 5 percent increase during the first
3 months of this year after falling
(E) with a 5 percent increase during the first
3 months of this year after having fallen [In both D and E seem to say Company cost cutting measures increases 5%, it is not the measures that increased or decreased its the profits.]

very good explanation - rockeyb

with...(option D) is an adverbial modifer that should ALSO make sense with the subject. Here, since the subject is 'Results' and the modifier talks about 'Profits', we need to introduce 'which' to eliminate the ambiguity
