Baffling Sentence Correction question

by Sak32 » Sun Oct 27, 2013 10:29 am
Here is an annoying Sentence correction question:

83. Although it claims to delve into political issues, television can be superficial such as when each of the three major networks broadcast exactly the same statement from a political candidate.
(A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks
(B) superficial, as can sometimes occur if all of the three major networks
(C) superficial if the three major networks all
(D) superficial whenever each of the three major networks(E)
(E) superficial, as when the three major networks each

Why is the answer E!I thought that "each" always takes a singular verb so how come "broadcast" is plural?? Shouldn't the answer be C instead?

Regarding the use of each:

EACH + OF + PLURAL NOUN:
Here, each serves as the SUBJECT, while of + plural noun serves as a modifier.
To match the singular subject each, the verb is SINGULAR:
EACH of the networks BROADCASTS twelve hours a day.
If we remove the of-modifier, we get the core of the sentence:
Each broadcasts twelve hours a day

PLURAL SUBJECT + EACH:
Here, the plural noun serves as the subject, while each serves as a MODIFIER.
To match the plural noun serving as the subject, the verb is PLURAL:
THE NETWORKS each BROADCAST twelve hours a day.
If we remove the modifier each, we get the core of the sentence.
The networks broadcast twelve hours a day.
