MBA Options

by vikramjain » Sun Dec 01, 2013 12:30 am
Hi,

I am Vikram and looking to pursue my MBA sooner than later :). I have been looking to pursue my MBA from Indian School of Business but havent applied till date because of poor GMAT score. My profile details below:

Age: 30 Years
Experience: 10.25 Years ( 4 Years in IT in various role, and 4 years in Utilities domain consulting and 2 years in general consulting)

Education:

Post Graduation: MS in Software Engineering (6.34 CGPA)
Graduation: Bachelor of Computer Applications ( 80%)
+2 - 65%
10th - 80%

GMAT History:

2009 - 590
2010 - 650
2011 - 620
2013- 650

I am planning to give another shot in next one month to cross the 700 mark.

Not much into extra-curricular though have been on a lot of event committees holding events within the organisation. Was active in early years till before graduation.

I am looking at a 1-year MBA from a top 10 university. Any advise and recommendations from this forum will be really helpful.

Thank you

Hey Vikram,

I would really need more detail from you about your work and education to give you a real profile, but from the looks of things you may be aiming a bit high. Top 10 schools are hard to get into even when you already have a 710 on your GMAT are the right age and have a fantastic job, and right now you have a bit too many weaknesses. OF course the GMAT is the most obvious, and I wish you great luck on your next retake!

But also: You are a bit on the older side, and from a tough applicant pool, with a so-so masters GPA

But maybe if your consulting experience is strong and with a big firm, and you have some good leadership you can make up for these things. Tell me a bit more about all your jobs (how many promotions you had, whether you have leadership, what your great achievements were) as well as which schools you got your degrees from and we can take this further.

Best,
JF

Hi Jon,

Many thanks for a detailed response.

1. GMAT - I will definitely improve on that and significantly at it :)
2. Just to qualify a bit more on the schools that I am looking at - I am definitely not looking at the US B-Schools for reasons unknown to me :)

I am more inclined towards European or Asian B schools such as LBS, Insead(Singapore?) or likes.

3. My Alma Mater:

Post Graduation: MS in Software Engineering (6.34 CGPA) - BITS Pilani (Distance Education)
Graduation: Bachelor of Computer Applications ( 80%) - Andhra University

4. In terms of my quality of experience

- For four years, I have done a fair bit of Business Transformation and Strategy Engagements for young niche Energy and Utilities consulting firm. I have mostly been in individual contributor roles but have dealt mostly with the CXOs in my engagements.

- In my second company for last 2 years plus, I have been leading a team of 6 consultants. I have played a significant role in developing the Business Consulting practice within my current organisation with decent success. I lead the service offering development for three service offering end-to-end. I am also involved in a large IT Business Transformation implementation as a Change Consultant.

In terms of promotions, I joined as a Business Consultant --> Moved to become a Senior Consultant --> Moved to join generic business consulting --> Lead the overall offering development with a team reporting into me.

I have a proven track record of quality delivery - in terms of being consultant of choice for any new customer, won the "Delivery Quality" award for me contribution to the project - only one to receive this.

Is this info relevant? May be I can PM for more info.

Hey vikram,
Your age and GMAT score are the biggest weaklinks. Where did do your MS and undergrad? You have not mentioned anything about your roles in those 10 years. Did you get any promotions? Were you involved in any leadership roles? Did you drive any good projects? I feel it is quite difficult for you to get into top 10 b schools, with an average academic profile and relatively low GMAT score. If you have an exceptional profile in other parts of your application, that might be enough as well. You need to introspect and come up with your extracurricular roles and leadership positions throughout your career. Write a document with whatever you have done since your highschool. (Part of a dance group, gave a karate show, camps, etc). Then, you can build your essays.
Besides ISB, you might want to look at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and IE business schools. Speak to few current students and alumni of your target schools. Good luck.
