ESSAY QUESTION:
"Employees always perform better when given a say in determining the boundaries of their roles within a company."

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

YOUR RESPONSE:
Determination of Boundaries of employees is a controversial issue. One one hand, higher level management can lay roles and responsibilities and have employees follow it, on the other hand, employees get involved in defining them. In my final analysis I believe that higher level management should decide roles and responsibilities instead of relying on each employee of a company.

Firstly, if all employees are involved in determining "who can do what", conflicts may arise among employees - several employees wanting to do same thing. By giving such role to only a few, those who didn't get may perform poorly.

Secondly, a company consists of employees of various levels. Not all employees (For example employees with less experience) may make the right judgment on what they should and should not do. Defining roles based on feedback from such employees may lead to issues in the future.

Thirdly, it may not be practical to get input from all employees to define their roles - especially in larger companies.

For above reasons, I believe that determining roles and responsibilities of each employee should stay with upper level management or a department like Human Resources. This will make it more practical to define everyone roles with no conflicts by people who have right judgment since they are the experts.
