ESSAY QUESTION:
"Companies should be prohibited from monitoring e-mail correspondence of their employees, since this policy destroys the atmosphere of trust and undermines employee morale."
From your perspective, how accurate is the above statement? Support your position with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
MY RESPONSE:
In this competitive world all the companies try to maintain their crucial information safely. And the companies take many measures to stop the data piracy or data theft. As part of this, the companies have started monitoring the e-mails of the employees. Some argue that the companies should be prohibited from monitoring e-mail correspondence of their employees, since this policy destroys the atmosphere of trust and undermines employee morale. In this discussion I shall present the arguments favoring the argument companies should monitor e-mail of their employees.
Competitive market has made a situation that one companies loss is another companies gain. In this scenario the process of monitoring e-mails of their employees will help the company to track if there is any critical data loss from the employees which will hamper the company. Its not the question of not trusting the employee but its the question of the future of the company as well as the employees of the company as a whole. For example the company itech solutions which was the fastest growing IT solutions company in 2006 has declined drastically with no new projects at hand by 2008.
When the company investigated on the reasons for the decline it found that during 2006 to 2008 most of the projects or bids, which the company has to get were gone to other companies at the last moment. It has tracked out that some of the e-mail conversations by the employees of the company just before the bid revealed sensitive information of the itech company's new projects have been passed to its competitors. So if the itech company had implemented the e-mail monitoring of the employees it would not have lost the projects to other companies.
Employees working for the company should be clear that the Company values are more important than prohibiting the monitoring issues. There are lot of email services available other than the company's that will serve the purpose for the employee. So the employee should use these resources other than the company's in order to communicate their personal matters.
People who oppose to the monitoring e-mails of the employees should think are they willing to work in a company which is going to sink in future due to the data theft. If they want to have their jobs safe, the companies they work for should be safe. The safer the company the better the morale of the employee in terms of the job security. The employees should fully encourage these processes by the company.
