Do I need to give GMAT again?

by Ashish Jassra » Wed Jun 09, 2010 11:15 am
Just have reached home after GMAT. I have scored 680 (v49 and q34).

Now, I am not sure if I need to give GMAT again or this score will suffice.

You may need some background, so here it is

Target Schools
LBS, INSEAD, IBS, Judge, Said

Age 32

Experience 11 yrs
Extensive experience in process management, project management, budge management team management
Managed teams of more than 30 resources or budget of more than 3million gbp
International experience
Industry - Retail/IT

I am happy to share mrore details if that helps

Experts, what is your view

Your WE seems adequate, but I would perhaps be concerned about your split, especially given that the quant side of the equation seems to be more heavily scrutinized by b-school admissions committees. The real question is whether or not you think you have the time and energy to improve the score. If you took it again and got the same or even lower score, it would only reinforce any concerns someone might have about your quant ability. You might also consider other ways to demonstrate to the committees that you can handle quant: taking additional courses, for example, or tackling quant-heavy job duties come to mind. It's been a tough and competitive road for the past couple of years at the top schools, so any edge you can give yourself would pay off. What you risk with an "average" application is facing too much competition from others in a similar pool. Think of ways to differentiate yourself and really stand out from the crowd.

EssaySnark thinks this is a strong profile and should be a good fit for the target schools, just looking at the basic info provided. Knowing the post-MBA career goals would help EssaySnark assess it, but on the surface, this candidate should be attractive for these schools.

LBS and INSEAD especially will be looking for a high quant on the GMAT and you are fine on that. You have more work experience and potentially more management experience than many other candidates. European schools want to see a lot of w/e so that's great. Depending on your grades in university, and most importantly, your career goals and positioning in your essays, you should be in very good shape for these schools. Make sure the essays are solid including excellent grammar, and then, assuming your AWA (and TOEFL if you need it) are decent, no need to worry about retesting just to raise up the verbal side of the GMAT. If you think you can raise it, then yes, but not a showstopper if you don't retest, in EssaySnark's opinion.

I'd agree that if you took the GMAT once you should only go for another try if you think you can up that verbal score. Also, post-MBA career goals matter. Some top companies (Goldman, McK) look at your GMAT score when you apply for internships / full-time positions.

Here's some more info on the GMAT:

Good luck!
