Gmat 680, low GPA, profile evaluation

by eknick » Mon Oct 03, 2011 11:51 am
Hi all. I'm Chinese with New Zealand citizenship currently working in the United States under work Visa.
26 year old, 2 years as a Sales-trader in a broker-dealer.

Undergraduate went to a top 30 school in the US, but GPA was merely 2.8. My fault! I majored in Financial Economics. Got into the firm I'm with now right after I graduated. I think my work history is somewhat considered short for a professional looking to get into a MBA program. I did very well during the 2 years and have good recommendations. Recently I just started my own startup, basically a solely owned fund investing in equities using profolio management and trading models that I've developed during my profession. I've always wanted to start my own fund and this is the first step to build a track record. Aside from the GPA weakness, I think one of my strength is that I've always been very focused. My major, my job, and my startup are all geared towards my goal.

Stern is my top choice of school and I know they can be pretty selective. I have sometime to up my GMAT scores before the deadlines. What are my chances if I do a first round application?

Well, even with a 680, Stern is not out of the question for ya.
Naturally if you can kick the heck out of the GMAT that'd be better.
:)

Having ALREADY started your own fund is promising though. This is something that many people are afraid to do until AFTER they graduate. If you can get good results here (you know, your fund performs like mad), or if you lead any others in your startup fund, you could have a golden hen there :)

NYU Stern is doable with a 680 and a lower GPA if you can truly show how your professional experience is outstanding. Is there anything unique about your trading models/strategy that you can convey easily? Can you show accomplishments in this new fund? Etc.

Another strategy is applying to NYU Stern part-time should you not be accepted into their full-time program.

Good luck,
