Profile Evaluation - GMAT 640

by APN » Sun Aug 26, 2012 12:41 pm
Hi App Experts,

Here's another peculiar case..looking for some honest and encouraging feedback

Education:
IIT-B (Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay)
Overall GPA 7.7/10 (First Class); Bachelors Degree in Mech. Engg.
Undergraduate Thesis published in an International Journal of Manufacturing.
Top of class in the final semester with a Semester GPA 9.6/10

Work Ex:

Schlumberger Oilfield Services (~4yrs)
1.5yrs in Brazil (currently based), 2yrs in North Africa (Tunisia, Algeria), small stints in Qatar, France
- Senior Field Engineer; leading international crews of 8-10 for high profile clients. learnt and speak Portuguese to work with local crews and client.
- Won several awards, international client recognition
- 2 promotions in 3.5 yrs, performance based: pay rise and transfer to Brazil (booming energy market)
- Incharge of a big technology project, that could significantly increase the co.'s market share; working directly with the Global Tech. Champion, R&D centre,France
- Up for 3rd promotion by end of this year (post which I will move out of the field, to management -office based)

Internships:
GE Healthcare (John F Welch Technology Centre, Bangalore- India)
- Using concepts of Lean Manufacturing, achieved a 2/3 reduction in tool assembly time for one of its product lines.
- Presented it to the audit team from Buc, France. Changes suggested were implemented.
- Received a verbal job offer to work for GE post graduation

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Mumbai- India
- Conducted a study on the role of technology in the Retail Industry

Extra Curriculars:

Hospitality Manager, Techfest (IIT-Bombay's annual science and tech. festival, footfall of 30,000 visitors, largest of its kind in Asia)

Football
- Gold Medal at Inter-IIT (sporting meeting of all 7 IITs nationwide)
- Captain of Football Club that came 2nd in in the Institute Football League
- Gold medal, Inter-hostel Sports Championship, IIT-B
- Several awards and recognitions

Languages - Speak fluent English, Portuguese, Basic French
Marathon - Ran the 21km Mumbai marathon in 2.3 hrs.

GMAT: (weakest link in the profile)
First attempt- 640 Q48, V28
Second attempt- 640 Q47, V30

Target Schools:
US - Any Top 15 where I stand a good chance
Europe - LBS, INSEAD, IESE (not sure how it fares globally, though FT ranked it in Top 10)

Although I know I should give the GMAT again, as it clearly is below par at most schools I'm aiming at and doesn't reflect a true measure of my verbal abilities, my current work load and the low motivation (of having faltered a second time for reasons I still haven't been able to figure out)
are big obstacles in me taking it again. And I want to apply this year and a bit confused as to where all I should focus my energies.

I want to pursue business strategy/ general management post MBA

Looking forward to your suggestions.
Cheers

Hmmm I will give you an answer which you will love and hate at the same time: RETAKE THE GMAT!!!!!
As an IIT graduate in the energy industry with loads of REAL international experience, you h ave a profile that has the potential to make it to a Top 10 programs. POTENTIAL! If you Beat the GMAT. And it's worth it. IF you are doing interesting things at work, then I'd say give yourself another year, and then with your GMAT apply for the best schools, rather than the very good schools.

What are your thoughts dude?

Agree with Jon. But for the GMAT score, most of the things fall in place for you.

If you decide to apply with this score and get into a good school you will regret big time knowing that you could have got into the best with a better score. You will do an MBA once, so give your best shot.

Jon, Anil

Thanks for replying. Totally agree with you guys. Retaking the GMAT seems to be the most logical thing to do, as I don't want to settle for a good school knowing that I could have gotten into a Top 10 one but never tried.

I'm just concerned that I might be edging towards the older age group at most programs if I decide to apply next year. I'm 27 already, will be 28 if I apply next year and 29 by the time I join a program.

A year's delay could def. add a few extra brownie points in strengthening my app, but would also mean controlling my itch for a fresh challenge (I'm already 4yrs with the same co.) :)

Retaking the GMAT now, this year, before most R2 deadlines would be a herculean task as I won't be able to dedicate enough time to the apps.

What would you guys suggest?

Cheers.

You have replied to your question in your first para. Since you want to get into a top school, the first priority is to get a better score. If you could do it this year, nothing better than that. If not it is worth waiting a year. All the best.
