Work experience is not necessary to take the GMAT as the test does not assess any skills you would gain on-the-job. However, work experience is usually necessary to apply to top MBA schools although HBS has its 2+2 program, Yale has its Silver Scholars program and Stanford defers exceptional candidates without experience.
