by vikram4689 » Fri Aug 31, 2012 10:23 pm
Compared with those who do not, drinking more than three alcoholic beverages a week runs a slightly higher risk of developing high blood pressure and hypertension.

(A) Compared with those who do not, drinking more than three alcoholic beverages a week runs
(B) Compared with non-drinkers, people who drink more than three alcoholic beverages a week run
(C) Compared with not drinking, those drinking more than three alcoholic beverages a week
(D) When compared with those who do not, people drinking more than three alcoholic beverages a week run
(E) When compared to non-drinkers, drinking more than three alcoholic beverages a week runs

doesn't this question incorrectly uses two comparisons - compared & higher

IMO in the above sentence, two different comparison indicators are used to compare two separate relationships. COMPARED WITH is used to compare PEOPLE (RELATIONSHIP between two different groups of people). MORE THAN is used to emphasize EXTENT OF DRINKING (DRINKING MORE THAN 3 BEVERAGES - people who drink MORE THAN 3, not 2, beverages). The same thing is happening in another example you provided.

Its wrong to use more than one comparison indicator to show ONE relationship. For example,

The manager at the office supply store believes that the new CLP-300 laserjet printer will be used more as a replacement for printers in small offices and libraries rather than for high quality and feature-packed machines in large company settings because its noise emission, only 43 decibels, is far less than most other laserjet printers, which make about 50 decibels of noise each. (incorrect grammatically). MORE..THAN and RATHER - used to compared ONE kind of replacement

However, following sentences are correct:

A 2011 survey found that more than 70% of the respondents used manipulative treatment on less than 9% of their patients.

The nutrition gurus reviewed more than 100 popular diets, then compared them for lifestyle factors.

yes this sentence is similar to one in link i provided and that is why i said it is incorrect because in that sentence 4 options that use this structure are incorrect. read this https://www.beatthegmat.com/hello-alliga ... tml#482154

p.s. i would suggest you to avoid that CLP question as it is one of the worst questions i have seen. i have debated and wasted my time on that. it is an ill-ripped off sentence from a gmat-prep sc

4 options are wrong not because they used two comparison indicators to show one relationship, but because they used improper companion. Do not you think ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES question uses 2 comparison indicators to show two different relationship? Pls read my last post again ,and if you still have some doubt/question, I will be very happy to share my views.

I have a different opinion - I consider CLP one of the BEST comparison questions, lots we can learn from this question. IMO There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong in CLP question.

What is the OA anyways?

I marked - B, but not completely satisfied with it because it changes the intended meaning

non - drinkers - who do NOT drink at all
although the intended meaning - comparison between folks drinking > 3 and <= 3
