Houston, we have a problem!

by rahul1981 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 6:40 am
Hello Folks,

I joined Beat the GMAT couple of months back with the intention to prepare and take the GMAT in May 2013.
I finally stated my preparation using the 60 day guide just two weeks back, but at almost 1/2 the pace.

I have run into small problem. I took my GMAT prep first attempt this saturday and scored a 750 (Q49,V42)
I was expecting to get around 600-650, but a 750 was a bit of a shocker.

Do I need to do something different to ensure I hit the same level in the real G? or should I just continue following the guide by the book?
Please help me folks, I am a pretty average guy and this score this early has thrown me a curve ball.

Regards
Rahul

Hmmm, a 750 practice test doesn't sound as problematic as your post might suggest :-)
You're definitely on the right track, so don't change anything in the way you're preparing.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks for the words of encouragement Brent!
I will continue with the guide by the letter, will post back after the second prep test attempt. Hopefully the next test will validate the first test's results.

Putting it out here as this might be useful. Some observations about my 1st prep test attempt that got me 750.

Quant :
1.> I got 13 out of the 37 wrong. I pretty much randomly checked the last 10 and got 9 out of them wrong. The remaining 4 wrong answers were evenly spread. I got the first 6 right then one wrong.
2.> The last wrong answers did not seem to hurt my score so much.

Verbal

1.> I got 8 out of 41 wrong. Again the last 6-7 were random guesses, most of which were wrong.
2.> I could not mark my 41's question, went unanswered. (There was a lag between clicking on the answer and the selection getting accepted. If you click in between, it gets unchecked. Be careful with this, especially on the last question.)

Would appreciate if somebody could provide some insight into these observations.

Regards
Rahul

Took another test yesterday and scored 740 Q49, V42. This was from a 2010 version of the GMAT prep software that I have. So it was a fresh test.
I also got the GMATprepnow video modules and will be using those for the guide.

Planning to take the GMAT around May end!

Hi Rahul -

You're conducting a good analysis here of your performance. This is an important step.

The fact that you are guessing on the last several questions in each section tells me that you need to work more on your time management during the test. You'll need to practice moving faster through the first questions in the test sections.

Normally, if a test taker is guessing at the last X questions because they are running out of time, this hurts the overall score/performance. This makes me wonder if the practice test has the same penalty as the live GMAT in terms of selecting incorrect answers.

It's possible that you performed really well, or you guessed really well on the last questions.

Either way, continue to work on your pacing on the test questions, and continue to prepare. While a 750 on the practice exam is really exciting, I'm concerned about how the timing may harm you on the real exam.

If I can help further, please let me know. I'm curious how things turn out for you, so please keep me posted!

Thank you for your response Wendy.
I am working on the timing problem. The latest attempt was much better though. I only guessed on the last 5 questions in Quant and last 2 in Verbal.
I am still in very early in my preparation phase and hope to do better in my next test attempt.

Will keep updating my test scores here regularly.
