I understand that GMAT uses an algorithm to compute the scaled score for each section. Considering the quant section in the context of this, if someone gets in the high 40's or 50 out of 60 on this, how many questions out of 37 do they have to get right? I know it will vary a little but I am curious to what the result is for people who have taken practice tests where you can see your results.

i dont think theres any specific way , especially with the way the test is graded (i believe the earlier questions affect your score more significantly than the later ones).
to give you some idea, i took 2 gmatprep tests. i didnt record the breakdown of my first test, but on my second test i got a 47 on the Q section. out of 37 questions, i got 24 right, 13 wrong. i got most of the wrong ones in the middle of the test, and then the last few i ran low on time so i got many of those wrong as well. so to get the scores you are advocating, i'd say you'd need at least 25+ questions right, with a majority of those coming in the first 2/3 of the test.

well like i said i (stupidly) didnt record my breakdown for my first gmatpreptest. i did note i got a 730 total both times, with the following breakdown of correct and incorrect answers:
test 1: 730 (last week)
Q: scaled score (?); 26 correct, 11 incorrect
V: scaled score (?); 35 correct, 6 incorrect
test 2: 730 (today)
Q: scaled score 47; 24 correct, 13 incorrect
V: scaled score 44; 36 correct, 5 incorrect
so i basically flip flopped a question or 2 in each of the sections (2 less correct math questions and 1 more correct verbal the second time around).
