polio Vs press eating habit

by PAB2706 » Mon Mar 02, 2009 12:20 am
9. Dr. Hegsted argues that just as polio vaccine is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio, mass dietary change is needed to protect the significant number who are susceptible to the life-threatening effects of press eating habits.

(A) just as polio vaccine is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio

(B) like polio vaccine, which is given to every person to protect the few who might contract polio

(C) similar to polio vaccine which is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio

(D) while, to protect the few who might actually contract polio, polio vaccine is given to every person

(E) similar to the giving of polio vaccine to every person in order to protect the few who might contract polio actually

OA A Kind of confused with the usage of just as and like. I know LIKE is used to compare people and AS is used to compare clauses. But cant understan this q. My answer was B

A

Use of 'as' is required because polio vaccine is comapared to mass dietary changes.

Like is used to compare nouns.

A is the answer.

Gramatically B is correct (comparing noun vs noun), but logically it doesn't make sense.

How can Polio vaccine protect from ...threating effects of press eating habits.?????????? Is it make sense.

In A... Just as..X , Y is also idiomatic.. there is no issue with that.
.. where X and Y are clauses.

a is the answer for we have a simple case in which as introduces an adverb clause that must followe by a main clause under a parallel structure construction. Choice b uses like but like is not connector and although it only presents a phrase, the noun in such phrase is qualified by a non restictive adjective clause that makes the idea wordy. Choice c breaks the parallelism and Choice d uses an infinitive for subject and Choice e a gerund, both which are also inconsistent with a parallel structure

My take-away from this is in "Just As X so Y", "So" is optional.

Thanks Paes for sharing!!

We are ok to omit 'so' in 'just as....so' idiom. I got this right and A is correct here.

Just one question is the comparison correct in B??? I don't think polio vaccine is ||el to mass dietary change.

Please help me to understand.
