Many pregnant women suffer from vitamin deficiency, but this is frequently
not due to vitamin deficiency in their diets; most often it is because they
have higher requirements for vitamins than do the rest of the population.

The best criticism of the reasoning in the statement above is that it

a. fails to specify the percentage of pregnant women who suffer from vitamin deficiency
b. gives insufficient information about why pregnant women have higher vitamin requirements than do other groups
c. fails to employ the same reference group for both uses of the term "vitamin deficiency"
d. provides insufficient information about the incidence of vitamin deficiency
in other groups with high vitamin requirements
e. uses "higher requirements" in an ambiguous manner

The answer to this question is C. The reason for this is that the argument first says that "many pregnant women suffer from vitamin deficiency" so they do suffer from this...then the argument says that this is "not due to vitamin deficiency in their diets."

So clearly the argument is using this term in two different ways. In the first it means that they are not getting the vitamins that they - as pregnant women - need. Then in the second usage it is talking about deficiency as compared to the standard guidelines for normal - not pregnant - people. So the women are getting enough vitamins for a normal person (not deficient) but not enough for their situation (so they are deficient).

Are there are any answer choices that we need to be explained?
