I was on the fence between C and E for a few seconds myself, then went with C because in E the -ing form seems to say that sound is preventing its own acoustic energy which is simply illogical. We want to say that sound can move fast because its energy is prevented from.... and that's exactly what C does (in fancier language, of course)

Totally agree. E is grammatically correct but distorts the meaning.
