A new analysis of ruins on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland reveals that the Viking settlement there is almost 600 years as old as the supposedly first North American colony.

A as old as the supposedly
B older than the supposedly
C as old as the supposed
D older than their supposed
E as old as its first supposedly

My answer would be B.

1. We need older than and not as old as here.

The Viking settlement there is 600 years as old as the first North American colony. -

What does this mean? We cannot have a construction like x years as old as (noun). As old as can be used to compare two nouns (people / things). They cannot be used to compare years with nouns.

2. Use of supposedly is right because it is correctly acting as an adverb, modifying the adjective first.

Only B fits the bill. OA please.

It should be bet A and B. But not sure why B and not A?

If I am not wrong then you can use as old as for years. Please help!!!

We can say -
1) The painting is 600 years old.
2) The painting is more than 600 years old.
3) The painting is 600 years older than the artifact.
4) The painting is as old as the artifact.

But we cannot say -
5) The painting is 600 years as old as the artifact.

Another example,
If you are 20 and your friend is 18, you would say
1) I am 2 years older than my friend.

If you are 20 and your friend is also 20, would you say -
1) I am 20 years as old as my friend
or,
2) I am as old as my friend.
?
1 is nonsensical. 2 is right.

If you want to emphasize the age as well, you can say - My friend and I are both 20 years old.

B/D...??
why not D guys...IMO it is D. (supposed vs supposedly)- adj vs adverb.
i think we need supposed (adj) to modify first North American colony- noun phrase.

though in D, i dont like their.... i dont know what it refers to.... i think it should be "the". so, option should be- older than the supposed.

so, IMO D.

Supposed is incorrect, because it is an adjective, as you have correctly identified. However, the modifier needed is an adverb, because the debate is which establishment was "first", not whether the Viking establishment was a colony. So the adverb "supposedly" is necessary to modify "first" instead of the adjective "supposed" that modifies "colony".

we can eliminate C and D for using " supposed" instead of "supposedly"
"its" in E is not clear and as old as is not preferred thus i will choose B
what is the answer?
