I finished undergrad in 2006 and spent my first two years post-college teaching English abroad in Thailand and China. I returned to the US in 2009 and have worked as a database coordinator at a non-profit for about a year. I'm considering applying to b-school for 2012. In the meantime, however, I'm thinking about taking a for-profit job. I'd like to make more money and work in a more challenging environment. I am not particularly interested in advancing in a sector (non-profit) that I do not plan on remaining in after I complete business school. I know that having a non-profit background can be an advantage when applying to business school. My question is this: if I take a for-profit job now, perhaps in consulting for example, how will admissions officers consider my background? Will I effectively lose the advantage that I would have had had I remained in the non-profit sector? I'd appreciate any advice or experience you can share.
