Evaluation please.

by junkakount » Tue Sep 09, 2008 6:40 pm
Information about me:
Low GPA from a top Engineering School
750 GMAT (51Q 40V)
4 years work experience with an industry leading technology company
A couple of volunteer work related activities
Lived abroad for some time in high school

I'll be applying to 5-6 schools, but my first choice is actually ranked in the mid 20s. I'll also apply to a few of the top5/top10 schools that I think will fit me well. I plan to go full-time.

Based on what I've read so far, it seems that I mostly need to explain why my GPA was low and show how I've addressed this concern. Then, strong essay and recommendations should be the finishing touches. Any other information that could be helpful?

Thank you so much for your time!

Dear junkakount,

Yes, you are correct with your assessment. Your GMAT does help mitigate the GPA, but it might be helpful to provide an explanation in the optional essay. Perhaps you worked through school? had a personal hardship such as illness or a family member was sick? The most important aspect of the explanation is how you are different now and thus will perform at a higher level academically in business school.

I think your first choice will find you interesting and you have a good shot there as long as you have strong essays, recommendations, resume and interview. Likewise, you will need to effectively convey why the program is a good fit for you.

Best of luck,
Lisa
