I'm going for a 4th attempt

by rtfact » Thu Nov 20, 2008 2:14 am
I had my 3rd attempt yesterday, and I would like to share some of my frustrations.

I sacrificed much of my personal life activities to succeed in the GMAT,
but still I haven't reached my desired goal, which is approximately the 700 mark.

I studied hard for all three attempts.
In the first one I received 550 Q46 V21.
In the following month I made the second attempt. 640 Q48 V28.
Another month passed, and I made another attempt (which was yesterday). 640 Q45 V32.
I know I am in the 700 level, and in all simulations (including gmatPrep) I have never received less than 48 in the quantitative section. Usually it is 49-50, and rarely 48. My average verbal score is 38.
I believe the pressure is influencing me by a great deal.
There is another factor. I have noticed that my time management in simulations is much better than it is during the actual test. In my third attempt I had to guess 10 questions (32-41), which never happened to me at home.

Another interesting fact was that in question 32 I had a really tough biology reading comprehension passage. I looked at the time, and there were 9 minutes left. I couldn't avoid thinking that I won't be able to complete the text in time, because such a difficult text (with 4 long questions) usually takes me 9 minutes, and indeed I guessed all of the questions in this passage.

My conclusions for the fourth attempt:
1. Strict time management. I need to increase my time checkpoints and to pace myself accordingly. (one checkpoint is not enough).
2. I need to learn to cope with stress in order to be more creative in quantitative.

My clone!

My story was 550>600>640....and finally 710.
I know how it feels......when you don't get what you want and when you know that you are capable of achieving it. (this sentence has lots of pronoun errors :) )

All the best for your 4th attempt.

Thanks for the support, and I promise to do anything in my power to kill it :)

don't you feel bad sometimes that you are not using every SC rule when writing comments in forums?

Not really. And I can assure you that I will keep using IF instead of WHETHER once I get into Business School.

yes, you definitely do.

however, in my experience (and that of many of my students), the way to cope with stress is NOT to try to make the stress go away (i.e., "relaxation techniques"). because you're taking an important exam, the stress WILL happen, no matter what. worse yet, if you use "relaxation techniques" successfully before the exam, you may find that the pressure during the exam actually worsens, because of the contrast principle - in other words, you'll actually feel even _more_ stressed during the exam, because of the contrast with your ultra-relaxed state before the exam.

instead, what you should learn to do is REFRAME the stress you're inevitably going to feel on exam day.

here's what i mean:
test anxiety isn't inherently "test anxiety". instead, what happens is that you feel a collection of symptoms - such as sweaty palms, accelerated heartbeat, distorted sense of passing time*, etc. - and then you CHOOSE to label those symptoms as "test anxiety".

instead, you can do the following:
(1) write down all the symptoms you actually feel when you're nervous about taking an exam. DO NOT WRITE WORDS WITH EMOTIONAL CONNOTATIONS, such as "nervous" or "anxiety". instead, only write things down in a neutral, clinical sort of way, such as "distorted sense of passing time", "shorter attention span", etc.
(2) take the list and think of other situations in your life when you're felt exactly the same things. also, give the list to your friends and DON'T tell them where the list came from. just ask them what the list sounds like.
(3) take the POSITIVE responses to #2. you'll probably get both positives and negatives - for instance, you'll probably get "pumped" or "adrenaline rush" in addition to "anxiety".
(4) CONVINCE YOURSELF that what you feel on exam day isn't really test anxiety at all, but, rather, whatever positive feeling you got from step #3. this can be done - in other words, you're basically convincing yourself that you're feeling pumped/excited/adrenaline rush, instead of nervous/anxious. remember, it's all in your head.

this is the same process that lets a lot of aspiring actors let go of stage fright.

in fact, this process is superior to "relaxation techniques", even if you could get those to work during the test (which is highly unlikely) - because not only does it get rid of test anxiety, but it actually puts test anxiety to work FOR you!

try it.
also try it on other negative feelings in your life. you'd be surprised how many of life's little unpleasantnesses can be gotten rid of, simply by labeling them as things that aren't unpleasant.

Well my friend,

We both are fighting with same enemy : GMAT.
I have read ur reaction after 3rd attempt in GMAT. whats really made me write you this PM is ur 'Never Say Die' attitude towards the GMAT and the way you have written "I promise to do anything in my power to kill it ", its shows that what kind of determination u have toward ur goal infact u have motivated me too in BIG way now.. I have given my GMAT twice and both time I have scored 610 & 600 respectively but I know that I can touch 700 EASILY (In my second attempt I would have almost about to do so as my Q was 50, but verbal beast have emerged from some where and I faced the same problem what u have faced..Now even I am giving my 3rd attempt in couple of week and I have been consistantly scoring 640 and so in MGMAT I need to work on my TIME & ANXIETY tats it..

Can you give me ur contact number I really want to talk to you so that my rythm should not broke.. BTW are u in USA coz I am in NY, USA.

well.. If you have 3 week then you should plan as follow:-

1) First finished off entire OG11/10 and, Green Supplement .. This all have @ 1200+ question (Offcourse you can see more than half of the question overlapping between OG10 and OG11& Green Supplement..

2) If you still have time then try to solve MGMAT paper.. Read the solution very carefully once you are done with ur exam.. I must say MGMAt has played very crucial role to increase my confidence in quant

3) Finally, solve both GMATPrep test , minimum 3 time each.. and read the solution of the sum, which ever u can't get write from any of the forum. Trust me in my GMAT I happen to see DS problems which were in line with what we have in GMATPrep ...

4) Also, I have solved entire 3 Set Gmat Paper from MBA.COM which consist of 9 paper.. I guess solving those question will develop in u a GMAT physic for Quant problem.. and u start feeling more comfortable wid those problem

5) Added to this u shud also pay attention to Probability and Permutation & Combination kind of problem.. Coz these are the area from which u may see question if u are doing really good in ur quant.. For that I can suggest u again MGMAT book or the problem which u will see in MGMAT test... Practice those religiously..

I guess I have suggested u too many way :)) ,, Try to cover whatever u can in this 3 week ... But remember one thing try to analyze the problem carefully.. give preference to Quality over Quantity .. Finally if u still not confident i wud seriously recommend u to posponsed ur date by a month ...

I hope these suggestion may have helped you..
Let me know if u need any more help

All the best Friend!!!

hehe.....

SC happens to be my strong area (atleast during GMAT prep)....and I do religiously use the SC rules while writing business emails or while writing/reviewing business proposals. :)

I feel my SC improved quite a bit.....by doing so.

good luck.
