I dont get statement 1.. pls help decipher lcm approach!!

In the fraction x/y, where x and y are positive integers, what is the value of y?

1. The least common denominator of x/y and 1/3 is 6.

2. x = 1


There was an earlier link.. but i still don't get the LCM approach

Statement 1...
this means that y is either 2 or 6
so insufficient

Statement 2
x=1
insufficient...

both still the value of y can be either 2 or 6

statement 1)

least common denominator is lowest multiple of denominator that denominators in question can go into.

in this case, they say x/y and 1/3 have lcd of 6. which mean that y has to go into 6. the only numbers that y could be are 2 and 6.

rest is cake.

Can you please explain the example.I know the definition of the LCM but I don't know how to make it in practice not only in this question but in all og question.
Please help my GMAT is very close
