Alexander Graham Bell

by gmat062011 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 8:32 am
Despite the controversy surrounding the invention of the telephone, because Alexander Graham Bell's design was the first to be patented, he is most often credited for the title "The Father of the Telephone".

(1)
because Alexander Graham Bell's design was the first to be patented, he is most often credited for the title

(2)
Alexander Graham Bell's design was the first to be patented because he is most often credited for being titled

(3)
because the patent that was designed by Alexander Graham Bell was the first, he is most often credited with the title

(4)
because his design was patented first, Alexander Graham Bell is most often credited with the title

(5)
the patent design by Alexander Graham Bell was the first, so he is the one most often credited with the title

-------------------

"Despite.....the telephone" is a modifier, so is it correct to use "because"after comma ?

Hi - the correct idiom is "credited with" we can eliminate option A and B
Also the usage in E is awkward and wordy
Left with option C and D. Option C changes the meaning and is also grammatically incorrect. He did not design the patent but got the design patented.
Option D is the best choice :)
