If you are trying to say that you agree with the optional comma concept posted above and its wrong in this case only because the sentence contains two *,and* then I differ on that.

If there is some other reason or if I mistook your comment please help me understand it. I am not arguing whether option F fits this case or not, but want to get clarity on the concept.
Hi,
What I meant to say is:
I don't remember seeing ',and' for a list of two things. Even if I assume that ',and' can be used to list two things, the use of ',and' before 'installing' seems incorrect to me.

But, I think we can use : "by putting all his refrigerator air compressors together in an insulated compartment, and by installing two fans and a duct..." , although I am unsure about the necessity of comma even here.

However, other constructions do not give an accurate picture of the order of events, as A does

Expert opinions would be appreciated.
Cheers!

i received a pm.

the GMAT doesn't test punctuation, so i don't want to extend this discussion about commas -- it's a waste of all of your time.
the only time you should care about punctuation is when it actually creates a different construction. for instance, a "comma + ing" modifier is fundamentally different from a "no comma + ing" modifier.

the problem with (f) is "carrying"; this would be wrong.
NO COMMA -ING modifiers imply that something is happening in the same timeframe as the action to which it's attached. therefore, "carrying" would (absurdly) imply that the duct was already carrying waste heat as the owner was installing it.

if you write (f) with "to carry" instead of "carrying" (and preferably with no commas, although you shouldn't care about that), then it is fine.
it has a slightly different meaning -- it suggests that the fans and the duct are somehow related (hence why you're grouping them), but that they are not related to the air compressors in the same way.
