Severance package

by Dean Jones » Sun Nov 20, 2011 1:50 am
Dear Friends,

I'm having problems in answering the following question. Please help.

Unlike most severance packages, which require workers to stay until the last day
scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance
package
even if they find a new job before they are terminated.

A. the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for
its severance package
B. the last day they are scheduled to collect, workers are eligible for the automobile
company's severance package
C. their last scheduled day to collect, the automobile company offers its severance
package to workers
D. their last scheduled day in order to collect, the automobile company's severance
package is available to workers
E. the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile company's severance
package is available to workers

OA after some discussions.

Regards
Deano.

I would say :
A- Incorrect, because of the "day scheduled", is not correct, it should be the "scheduled day"
B-Incorrect, meaning change, "to collect" is not linked to "scheduled day "
C-Correct, we have "scheduled day" and workers that refers to the "they are terminated"
D-Incorrect, Meaning is OK but it is not concise
E-Incorrect, meaning change, "to collect" is not linked to "scheduled day "
F-sorry, there is no F :-)

Comparison btn severance packages and serverage package of auto companies required - D vs E

E - the prep ph "UNTIL THE LAST DAy THAT THEY ARE SCHEDULED TO COLLECT' is wordy. The adjective schdeduled (as in original sentence) is not modifying noun DAY, changing the original meaning.

Secondly, PACKAGES REQUIRE WORKERS...UNTIL THEY ARE SCHEDULED. IMO THEY is ambiguous here - can refer to packages/workers both. Ideally since WORKERS is the direct obejct we should use OBJECT PRONOUN (their) if we want it to refer to workers.

Both above issues addressed in D. IMO D

You are right... D is correct, I did not see the comparison.

OA is D. But I picked E. Can anyone explain why my choice is incorrect?
