IT vs THEY

by Dean Jones » Sun Dec 18, 2011 6:19 am
Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

Employment costs rose 2.8 percent in the 12 months that ended in September, slightly less than they did in the year that ended in the previous quarter.
(A) less than they did
(B) less than it did
(C) less than they were
(D) lower than
(E) lower than they were

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

Regards
Deano.

We are comparing the increase of employment costs. So lower than cannot be used. It can be used when we compare values. less than is the right usage here. Increase this year is less than the increase last year. - D, E eliminated
B - it has no clear referent
C - were is not parallel to rose

IMO A.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

sam has given a different way at looking the problem, good explanation !!

Let us see it from a different perspective --

"Lower" is an adjective and should be followed by a noun or a noun phrase - D and E is incorrect

"less" is versatile in nature : it can act as an adjective ( noun modifier), adverb( verb modifier ) and as a noun

B is out because of the usage of "it"

C - rose is not parallel to were, as stated by sam !!

left with only A.
