by goelmohit2002 » Sat Mar 14, 2009 12:23 am
Hi All,

In the below question, the OA is
"D"
. Can someone please help me understand why
"D"
is preferred over
"E"
?

Sharply fewer ducks are expected to migrate south this fall and may be the lowest figure on record, according to United states and Canadian wildlife experts ?

a) Sharply fewer ducks are expected to migrate south this fall and may be
b) It is expected that sharply fewer ducks will migrate south this fall and will perhaps be
c) The ducks expected to migrate south this fall will be sharply reduced, perhaps to
d) The number of ducks that will migrate south this fall is expected to drop sharply, perhaps to
e) A sharp drop is expected in the number of ducks that will migrate south this fall, which may be

Thanks
Mohit

in E wrong usage of "which"
E is wordy
and active verb in D is preferred

I don't know of any idioms here. But all I can logically think is that "sharply" will modify a verb/adjective that implies "change". "reduce", "drop" etc imply change, and the change gradient is very steep, or change is very sharp. "Fewer" is a state, not a "change".
