Intro-Help needed!

by vinay1983 » Thu Aug 15, 2013 7:41 am
Hi,

I am Vinay. An agricultural graduate. Have 7 years of experience in banking industry. Served as a head of Self Employment Training Institute, which is sponsored by the bank. I also won an award from the Ministry of Rural Development, GoI for the services i rendered while discharging my duties in the institute.

GMAT Story

i first took GMAT on May 18, 2013. I prepared for the exam by using the Manhattan Guides. I scored

530 Q 39
V 23
AWA 5

Now, there is something i need to say. I could answer 2 quant questions because the I ran out time. (There was some issue with the test centre i chose)

This made me nervous, as i knew that there is a heavy penalty for not completing the questions.

Further I lost concentration during my verbal.Though i tried my best to remain calm, things did not turn out good. The result! 530.

I then decided to quit my Job to study for the exam.I am undergoing coaching for the same.recently, I took GMAT prep. I scored 510. Q 27 V 34.

Surprisingly previously i had scored 430 and 420 on the GMAT prep in April, 13 and May, 13.Yhe present score seems improved.

However I have a question to ask.

Should i book the exam date 1 month from now? Or should I wait for few more days and then book my date? I feel booking the date might help in taking preparation seriously.

Apart from this, I also need to know based my profile what score should i aim at?

Guidance required.

Vinay

Hi vinay1983,

Based on your scores, you have to work on your consistency. As such, you should push your Test back a bit and put some more time into your studies.

Running out of time and not answering some questions DOES incur a penalty, but since it was only 2 questions, then then the penalty would not have been huge.

What schools are you planning to apply to? Most programs post their "average" GMAT scores for incoming/current classes, so you can gauge your progress and if your GMAT score is within "range" of any particular school.

Depending on your score goals, you might consider adding some additional study materials to the ones that you're already using. If you have any specific questions, then you can feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you for your response. I am using Manhattan Strategy guides and the materials provided by the trainer.

I am interested in Finance, hence some of the schools i wish to apply are ISB, IIM L, XLRI, S.P.Jain.
Also the reason i asked about booking the date was because IIM Lucknow has cut of date of 30.09.2013.I do not want to miss out on that deadline.

I would also like to know whether all the candidates who apply are measured by the same yardstick of GMAT score or compared to their respective group?

I also request the experts on this site to give their suggestions on my earlier post.

Hi vinay1983,

The best way to learn about a particular school or program (including that program's policies, procedures, etc.) is to contact the school directly. You can certainly learn about what scoring range you'd need to be in to be a competitive applicant.

Since you're working with a tutor/coach already, what does that person have to say about your plans, progress, etc? If you were self-studying, then I would make some suggestions, but since you're working with a coach, then your coach should be helping you with your plan. I would suspect that pushing your test back a bit will give you more opportunity to study, which would probably be beneficial.
