A. Like Rousseau, Tolstoi rebelled
B. Like Rousseau, Tolstio's rebellion was
C. As Rousseau, Tolstoi rebelled
D. As did Rousseau, Tolstoi's rebellion was
E. Tolstoi's rebellion, as Rousseau's, was

my question ... is the following changed sentence correct

As did Rousseau, Tolstoi rebelled against the unnatural complexity of human relations in modern society.

The easy way to choose is to use "like" when no verb follows and "as" when a verb does follow. Your change is indeed correct.

could you just elaborate by some sentence framing.btw use of like and as.
