SC Problem

by manishkd » Mon Jul 22, 2013 12:11 am
Before researchers learned how to make a synthetic metabolic enzyme, extracting it meticulously in tiny amounts from the pancreases of human cadavers.
(A) researchers learned how to make a synthetic metabolic enzyme, extracting it meticulously
(B) researchers had learned about making a synthetic metabolic enzyme, they had to remove it meticulously
(C) researchers learned how to synthesize the metabolic enzyme, it had to be meticulously extracted
(D) learning how to make a synthetic metabolic enzyme, researchers had to extract it meticulously
(E) learning how to synthesize the metabolic enzyme, it had to be meticulously extracted by researchers

I am not able to understand why OA is C.

Hi manishkd,

This SC is based on modification rules and "active voice" style.

The 1st issue is that there are 2 ways that this sentence COULD begin:
1) Modifying phrase, then a comma, then the subject
2) Active voice = Subject does action

The 2nd issue is the word 'meticulously', which needs to modify (and be right next to) the word "extracted".

The answers:
A - Active voice, BUT the word 'meticulously' is misused
B - Active voice, BUT the word 'they' is redundant and 'meticulously' is misused
C - ACTIVE VOICE, pronoun 'it' MATCHES enzyme, 'meticulously extracted' is CORRECT
D - Modifying phrase, subject, BUT 'meticulously' is misused
E - Modifying phrase DOES NOT match the subject
