Hi All,

In the below question the OA is [spoiler]"B".[/spoiler] Can somebody please help me understand why [spoiler]"B"[/spoiler] is preferable over [spoiler]"A" and D" [/spoiler]?

New Evidence suggests that women may react differently than men to high blood pressure, or hypertension. Women with hypertension are less likely to suffer from ensuing complications, such as heart attacks or strokes, and are less likely to die as a result. Women's higher estrogen levels may be related to this phenomenon: After menopause, when estrogen levels lower, women gradually become more and more susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

Which of the following positions would be best supported by the statements in the passage above ?

A) Very elderly women with high blood pressure are no less susceptible to complications than their male counterparts.
B) When treating their female patients for hypertension, doctors should take into account whether or not the patient has gone through menopause.
C) Men with hypertension should receive immediate treatment, while women with high blood pressure may wait until their condition becomes severe.
D) Since women withstand high blood pressure more readily then men do, the benefit they receive from lowering it are relatively insignificant.
E) Women with very high blood pressure are as likely to suffer complications from their conditions as are men with only slightly elevated blood pressure.

Here,
A talks about very old women and that is out of scope.. eliminate
B correctly infers that menopause has some effect on the women's reaction to blood pressure.
C states that women with high blood pressure can wait for an operation until their condition become severe and that is NEVER said or meant by any statement in the para..
D it is talking about the benefit they receive from lowering of estrogen level and that is also never said indirectly in the stimuli.
E Now, this one is quite a contender as it states that women can handle blood pressure differently, but it's talking about very high blood pressure and that makes it weak as it is exaggerating the meaning of the stimuli..

B,C,D: we cannot make a judgment as to whether or not treatment should be carried out based on the above.
E. the relative degree of hypertension is not factored in to the considerations above, only the existence of it.

But, as written by "thetrystero"in one of the above posts...why can't we interpret "A" like

"A: After menopause ... women gradually become more and more susceptible to cardiovascular disease. "

And as we know menopause happens around age 50....so very old women would be equally susceptible to complications as their male counterparts.

Moreover "B" is talking about hypertension treatment....not the elimination/treatment of complications....how does the the same can be judged from the info in the pessage....

Hypertension = cause.(Difference between Men and Women is "not" here). As per the info in the passage both genders are likely to suffer equally from hypertension. What is the different is ensuing(i.e. following) complications.

Complications like X, Y, Z= effect.( Difference between Men and Women is here)

So IMO if statement "B" would have been talking about treatment of complications of Hypertension...then undoubtedly "B" would have been best. But here "B" is talking about Hypertension treatment only.

Please tell if I am thinking in wrong direction or thinking too much.

A looks more correct.
Lot of reasons ppl have already posted. I'll add one more.

The passage talks abt the comparison between men and women.
B talks only of one aspect and doesn't take care of comparison anywhere.

After reading through this again, I'm more comfortable with going for B.

Although it does say that women do become more and more susceptible, it doesn't mention the rate at which this occurs, hence we cannot draw any conclusions about how long it takes them to reach the same level as men. The only thing we know for sure is that menopause is a certain transition point, and it is this indicator that is used in B. In any case the use "very very old" is deliberately vague enough for us to assume that this is not the best answer choice.

But if you look then there is issue of cause and effect in "B"....."B" talks abt treatment of cause(hypertension)....but passage talks about effect(effects of hypertension i.e. complications)....how can we draw conclusion abt cause from the passage ?

A - From the given passage, we cannot infer that elderly women must have already gone through menopause. I think if we do not assume that "A" cannot be the answer.

Given that, B looks better.

Read A properly "Very elderly women with high blood pressure are no less susceptible to complications than their male counterparts". What this means is that very elderly women are either as susceptible or even more than their male counterparts. Well, this was not stated anywhere in the argument.

B clearly is the winner. Hope this helps.
