error on gmat prep?

by daniyatom » Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:38 pm
a certain group of car dealerships agreed to donate X dollars to a red cross chapter for each car sold during the 30 day period. What was the total amount that was expected to be donated?
(1) a total of 500 cars were expected to be sold
(2) 60 more cars were sold that expected, so that the total amount actually donated was $28,000

Shouldn't the answer be B as statement 2 states clearly that 28000 was donated.

Per GMATprep, the answer is C.

Please advise. thanks

The question states what was the expected amount to be donated. The answers give you the actually amount that was donated. Pretty sneaky.

I think the answer is correct as C
Stm1. Total expected donation=500x which is insufficient to answer.
Stm2. 28000=expected+60x. since we dont know expected this statement is also insufficient
combining 1+2, we get the answer.
