Intriguing GMAT problem.

Hi Math Gurus - In GMAT Prep 2, this problem gave me headaches.
I thought answer was D, but turns out to be A. Any Ideas.

Then SQuare root of - X |X| equals
a. -X
b. -1
c. 1
d. X
e. Square root of X.
