OG11_DS_Q151

by farooq » Sat Oct 31, 2009 11:01 pm
Q: x and y are positive integers, is ratio of x to y greater than 3?

1: x is 2 more than 3 times of y.
2. The ratio of 2x to 3y is greater than 2.
Answer is D

But, if I phrase statement 1 in an equation, statement will give x=2+3y. Based on that I canceled statement 1. In addition, I haven't picked any numbers and haven't tried to solve it.

Where I did the mistake (in converting 1. into equation)?

Statement 1 :
x=2+3y

Hence x/y = 2+3y/y = 2/y + 3
Since it is given that x and y are +ve 3 + some positive quantity will always be greater than 3.

Statement 2 is simple

Hence D.

x/y >3 can be re-writte as x-3y/y > 0.
since we know x and y is +ve all we have to figure out is if x>3y or not.

1. tell you directly that x>3y+2 -> suff
2. rewrite 2x /3y > 2/1 to 2x>6y -> x>3y-> suff

hope that helps.
