2 weeks to go, is the OG enough?

by bhatius » Thu Aug 08, 2013 11:10 pm
Hi,

My GMAT is on the 25th of August and I need some advice on what to do in the last two weeks before the test. I gave MGMAT1 2 weeks back and got a highly disappointing 590. My problem was timing. Last week I gave GMAT Prep 1 (got a 660), and also gave a full length MGMAT2 (got a 640). While progress is encouraging I know I have a 700+ in me if I can just win the battle against the clock!

I've practiced questions from OG 13,12 and 10 and got at least 80% questions right irrespective of difficulty, all within my target times. I've even worked to strengthen my weaknesses (inequalities and CR). But somehow it doesn't come together during the tests. My question is do I stick to the OGs and tests from now on and just practice harder or is there some other stuff I should be doing at this point? I plan to give 5 more tests before the actual GMAT.

Thanks,

Nikhil

Add to your list the GMATPrep add on pack. That is $25 and provides 400 more questions on the GMATPrep software. These are not new GMATPrep tests, but the questions are offered on the computer, giving a more authentic experience as compared to working with books.

Also add the Veritas Prep Free Computer Adaptive Practice Test to your list of must-dos. This new test seems to be more accurate than anything else out there aside from the GMATPrep. link: https://www.veritasprep.com/gmat/free-gm ... tice-test/

Why do you plan on giving 5 tests in the last two weeks of preparation? I would think three to four tests would do it along with the GMATPrep add on questions that I mentioned. You can take GMATPrep 1 test a second time. You can take GMATPrep 2 test two times and the Veritas test I mentioned. That will give you plenty of work!

I noticed that you said inequalities and CR were your weaknesses. CR is a big category to have as a weakness.

Here are links to some CR questions, many original questions that I wrote and others are responses to questions students have posted. Select the topic that you need to work on and be sure to read the first article right at the top.

Woah! Thanks a lot David! CR used to be an issue, but I'm fairly good at it now, though I do occasionally lose my way in Except and Boldface questions. I'll definitely go through all the links you've posted. Would you have a list of such links for inequalities too? I'm not confident in inequality data sufficiency questions.
I'll take your advice about the additional questions for GMAT Prep and the Veritas mock. One more thing. Let's say I don't cross 700 (my target) about 8 days before my test, is it advisable to reschedule for a later date? Or can I hope to see a 20-30 point jump in the real test?

Thanks again!

You could make a 20 point jump, but only if you get better during those 8 days. I would prefer to see you get at least a 690 before test day, since 10 points could certainly happen. But of course, it could go the other way so even a 700 practice test is not a guarantee.

I am glad you are getting better at CR!

Let me see what I can do on inequality DS questions.

Hi Mate,

I have my Gmat in 5 weeks from now. I have bought the gmatprep question pack1, which David mentioned above. I must tell you its really good for practise it gives you 404 questions, which are retired questions from previous gmat so they will give you a feel of real gmat. I would also add something to the practise is Veritas prep question bank. Its free practise questions but if you doing CR they would take the best out of you. I have been practising veritas prep question bank for all my verbal and after doing them your brain will be so exhausted because they are tough and you get to learn a lot from each question. I would recommend that too.

Rest best of luck.

Thank you David for the links as now a days I am onto veritas prep books and practise tests. I have given 2 practise test and I have 3 more to give before my exam. I am on 680 level myself but my weakness is RC and its a big drawdown for me because my accuracy in CR and SC is around 85% but RC is less than 40% which is a disaster.

Thanks
Rakesh
