Greek Diet

by gmat740 » Thu Apr 30, 2009 9:05 pm
The diet of the ordinary Greek in classical times was largely vegetarian—vegetables, fresh cheese, oatmeal, and meal cakes, and meat rarely.
(A) and meat rarely
(B) and meat was rare
(C) with meat as rare
(D) meat a rarity
(E) with meat as a rarity

the question has once been put up in the forum, but I saw no proper reason for the OA.

IMO E.

Read the sentence as below:

The diet of the ordinary Greek in classical times was largely vegetarian with meat as a rarity.

Now, try the same with the other options & you will the issue yourself. The trick in this question seems to be in eliminating the examples & completing the sentence with the correct answer option.

As above suggested rarity is in parallel with largely.
Also usage of 'with' put emphasize on vegetarian which is required in the sentence.
