Profile Evaluation

by kevindstevens » Wed Jan 23, 2013 10:32 am
Looking for a little help here. I know with my profile I won't get into most first or second tier schools but I would like to advance my career in the energy industry to so I am looking to strengthen my business background.

Education:
University of North Texas - Denton, Texas
BA in Political Science GPA: 2.5

GMAT Score:
Will take March of 2013, have taken 4 practice tests with average of 640 score

Job Experience:
Green Mountain Energy-September 2012 to Present
Commercial Sales Account Manager

Fossil Inc.- Dallas, Texas July 2008 to August 2012
Store Manager
Responsibilities:
"¢ Maximize total sales by analyzing and reacting to reports generated in SAP
"¢ Create a weekly schedule designed to maximize business efficiently using monthly, quarterly, and yearly trends, traffic (amount of people who enter store) and employee productivity reports
"¢ Project monthly, quarterly, and yearly sales goals using a combination of reports, trends and company initiatives
"¢ Ensure that payroll is balanced as a percent of sales weekly, monthly, and quarterly to allow for maximum profitability
"¢ Analyze and report merchandise category selling reports as well as consumer feedback to superiors and executives to help them adjust Fossil's global strategy accordingly
Accomplishments:
"¢ Increased total sales volume from $775,000 in 2009 to $925,000 in 2010 to $1,018,000 in 2011 with a current projected sales volume of $1,120,000 in 2012
"¢ Increased all performance indicators including Items Per Customer, Average Dollar Sale, Conversion (number of transactions per customer traffic) and Sales Per Employee Hour by a minimum of 15% during my tenure by creating a culture of responsibility, engagement, and ownership
"¢ Developed a monthly sales trend worksheet using Excel which is now in use by Fossil's West Brand Retail Group (approx. 100 stores)
"¢ Decreased store's "shrink" (percent of inventory lost vs. total sales volume) from .7% ($5,500) to .04% ($408) by implementing a detailed store organization process as well as ensuring all company procedures were followed thoroughly
"¢ Trained three subordinates to promotions within the organization including one to the store manager level by fostering a culture of engagement, feedback, leadership, and encouraging an atmosphere of ownership in the store's success
"¢ Received an Exceeds Expectations on most recent annual employee review

Unique Experiences:
-Mother attempted suicide due to divorce during college, took care of her while she was rehabbing from the substance abuse

-Grandmother had stroke around the same time and needed 24/7 care which I helped with due to mother's incapacitation

-Invested in real estate properties at 22 while in school, and will sell in the next few months to a profit of around S25,000.

Do I have any chances at getting into a decent school? I am fairly certain my essays are strong, I am an English minor and have re-drafted them several times.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Kevin,

With the kind of profile, I would suggest you to target schools with GMAT range between 590-710, like: Minnesota-Carlson, Indiana-Kelley, Emory, Ohio-Fisher, SMU-Cox, Texas-Mays, Boston-Carroll, Georgia-Terry, Smeal, Thunderbird and Michigan-Broad. You can also try your chances in b-schools by clicking https://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool

To convert your chances from application to admission, you need to work hard on your application essays and demonstrate your professional achievements and leadership skills during final interviews.

Feel free to post any other concerns you might have.

Best,
Yash

Hi Kevin,

In addition to what Yash has mentioned.

I highly recommend that when you write your essays, try to weave your unique experiences into your essays with a positive spin and outcome. For instance - how did it help build your character? With your kind of profile, it is key that you focus on your unique background.
