Profile Evaluation

by chaturipriya » Mon Aug 23, 2010 6:59 am
Hi,

I want to get my profile evaluated for NYT Langone Part Time MBA starting Spring 2011. The last date for putting in the app is 15-Sep-2010.

My profile is-
- Indian
- Male
- Age 33
- Work experience - 10 years
- Bachelor's GPA - 3.5/5.00 (in year 2000)
- Working in Software Industry
- Working as a Project Manager for last 3 years
- Handling a portfolio of 3 projects at this point of time
- Have worked on offshore - onsite model for all these years
- Out of 10 years, have worked in India for 4 years and US for 6 years
- GMAT - 690
- Interested in only NYT langone p/t
- No extra curricular activities worth mentioning

Am I asking for too much? Do I have any chance of getting into the langone p/t? Shall I apply for some other schools too?
Pls help.

Thanks. Quick response would be highly appreciated.

Hi,

Your GMAT is well within the parameters for this program (average 675) and they accept over half of their applicants. Your combination of managing projects and working both on and off-shore should be attractive. All those factors are positive. Nevertheless, you are in a very competitive pool; there are thousands of Indians with strong technical backgrounds applying to US business schools every year. To be successful you will have to find a way to make your application stand out. What about your projects is unusual or particularly topical? How broad is your actual management experience? Do you have individuals reporting directly to you? Do you have responsibility for multi-functional teams? Your lack of extra-curriculars will hurt.

Overall, you are clearly qualified for the program and could both benefit from and contribute to it. However, many hundreds, even thousands, of qualified applicants are turned down because of class size limitations. If you are determined to get an MBA next year, you should certainly consider expanding your target school list. Putting all your eggs in one basket, however attractive that basket might be, is risky. Only you can decide whether a school other than Langone is worth the investment of time and money.

Thanks Tani for your response. I do have 4 people reporting to me here and another 14-15 in India. Also I take care of multiple projects end to end i.e. from preparing the proposal to rate negotiations to getting the statement of work signed off - generating the bills & tracking the account receivables - to getting the actual work done. I also had 18 people reporting to me while I was working from India in 2006.

Also I interface with my directors & VP on a very regular basis for exploring new opportunities or adding staff to the existing team or to attend to escalations.

Could you pls advice if there are any professionals who can help me in fine tuning my application?
