New in the Game

Hi All .. jus browsed through this forum and found it really informative.
i just want to clear few doubts.

i am planning to give GMAT and want to score 700+.
i am working and cureently having 14 months of experience in IT.

i just want to know for all those who have given GMAT.

How many months should i devote for the preparation.
i am an engineer by profession.

and how many hours of study per day would be good enough.. just a vague idea.
i gave a test just to know the pattern of the exam just like that.. without any preparation and knowledge
and scored 500.
i just got the feel of the whole exam pattern after that. i did not even brush up any formulae before giving that.

now upon searching the net over past 1 month.
i have bought
Kaplan premier program and
OG 12th Edition.

i am not sure of the preparation startegy even ..
kindly help me on this
your any input be of great help.
i am planning to give GMAT withing next 3-4 months ..
but dont know whether is a practical timeline i have decided or not.

i have been a good student in my school and college.
and maths is something i am comfortable in.

LOL...dude, you waited all of an hour before you posted this saying you're waiting for replies....lol. People's goal in life is not to respond as soon as you post a question on the board. Now on to your questions. You're an engineer, so I will assume that you will be fine with the quant with some minor practice. I would suggest getting Manhattan GMAT Number Properties to supplement your math preparation. Number Properties is the only topic on the GMAT that even gives those with math backgrounds difficutlies. For verbal I would recommend getting the PowerScore Critical Reasoning Guide, Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction, and see if you can find someone to sell you the Veritas Reading Comprehension guide. Veritas doesn't sell their guides to the general public, but they have the best verbal prep in the business so if you can't take a class with them, see if you can find that guide. In general I would spend 3-4 hours 5 days a week and take a CAT on Saturday.

I would say that even before you begin studying... do not hop right into doing problems... i suggest researching the GMAT. The types of questions, the amount of questions, the important questions, the easy questions to study, how scoring is calculated etc etc. THEN and only then should you hop into study mode.. i'm a firm believer that you won't be able to do well on this test if you don't fully understand what it's testing... because it's not testing memorization - contrary to popular belief

The minimum about of time we suggest to study for the GMAT is 3 months at a minimum of 45 minutes to 1 hour 1/2 per day. This allows you the time to become familiar with the various problem types and adapt your process to look at the problems in the most efficient way.

High quality preparation means becoming intimately acquainted with the test structure, format, and the types of questions that are being asked. It means improving upon your weak areas through practice and repetition. It means developing your ability to answer correctly the tougher questions. It also means becoming aware of the types of answers that tend to be the correct ones.

Use a systematic approach to your GMAT test. Answer all questions; skipping questions is not helpful on the GMAT CAT.

Make a special effort to improve your weaknesses along with strengthening your expertise during practice.

Do not take breaks during a practice test. In the actual test center, you will not be allowed coffee breaks etc. during sections.

Eliminate distractions and be conscious of time. Especially when you taking practice tests, be as aware of the clock as you will need to be on the actual exam.

Locate or set up a serious test-taking environment in your house or a public library or a park or another facility so that you can exclusively focus on taking the mock tests.

i am just starting to get familiar with the GMAT pattern ... and the type of questions.

from yesterday i have started reading KAPLAN premier program book.

i am just re4ading through the ways in which different types of questions are asked.

i will get back to you if would need any mopre suggestions.

Achieve4Sure if you have itunes... do a search for MBA podcaster. there are over 100 10+ minute podcaster related to MBA's and B-schools but the ones I suggest in particular are specific to the GMAT. I forget which one exactly is the one that I'm thinking of but I remember a quote from an MGMAT instructor saying "I don't need to teach a student math all over again... i just need to teach them GMAT math" if you're ever bored I suggest just listening to a couple of them... again that's if you have itunes...

HI .. i am again with a query ...
as of now i am doing kaplan book .. then wil it be fine to go for OG .. or should i do some other material before going for OG.

like i have heard of manhattan guides ..
i dont know which are best and should i go for them prior to OG.

OG is a book everyone recommends.
apart from that which books should i have ..

before OG do the MGMAT guides... it will definitely help you for the OG guide

Hi Achieve4sure,

As you understand that you are good at maths, you should probably devote more time in preparing the verbal part of GMAT. If you prepare sincerely for 2 to 3 hours daily, you can very well take the GMAT in 3-4 months. I would like to suggest that take necessary care that you don't take a break in your preparation, it may impact your momentum.
The more you learn, the more you know, what you don't know.

Thanks Guys for your time and concern.
i will really take care of my pace, as i know i am a lethargic person.
once left the whole thing will be left for ages.
so i need to be in tune and under pressure.

yes one more thing
i have heard that one needs to do OG 2 times?
is it?

Hi all,

Writing after some time
well just wanted to tell you that
yesterday i gave powerprep gmat test 1. after doing around 90% of kaplan premiere book
and scored 600.

i want to go beyond 700.
what am i supposed to do now to scale my scores.

i will start doing OG12 from today or tomorrow.
how should i improve in my scoring.
