I took my first GMATPrep practice test and scored a 670. I looked at my results and thought I should have scored higher but I'll let you be the judge. Here is some info about my exam:

-Quant
I got 14 wrong in the quant section but only got 2 wrong between 26-37 so I thought I finished fairly strong.

-Verbal
I got 8 wrong in the verbal section but only got 1 wrong between 25 and 41 so I thought here I finished very strong.

I took a MGMAT practice exam a few weeks ago and scored a 700 and I got 16 wrong in the Quant and 14 wrong in the verbal, both less than on the GMATPrep. I know that the exams are adaptive but I figured that if I got less wrong and and finished stronger on the GMATPrep exam that I would have had a higher score than 670? Can anybody give me some insight here? Did anybody else have the same experience? My goal is to break 700, do you think I am good shape to do that on the real exam based on my last 2 practice exams? Are the GMATPrep practice exams harder? Is the scoring a little off on the GMATPrep exams? Has anybody gotten close to the same amount of questions wrong in both sections and scored higher? Any Insight will help, thanks.

Drewski -

Missing 14 questions on the Quant and 8 on the Verbal is actually around the 670 range. 14 wrong out of 37 does leave you with room for improvement on the Quant. Your verbal is better at only 8 wrong. Still you have to figure that to break into the top ten percent you need to miss fewer questions than that.

Why did you make all of your mistakes early? That is a curious result. It is important to complete the test and great that you got so many questions right late, but the test does not really give you a bonus for finishing well.

Many students have noted that the scoring on several "company" tests, including Manhattan is different - for example you can miss more questions for a similar score compared to the GMATPrep in part because the questions are harder. Don't use these to try to predict your score on test day, only to help you study. Only the official GMATPrep is predictive.

Your best bet is to figure out why you missed the questions that you did on the GMATPrep and devise a strategy to avoid making those mistakes in the future. Remember that you can re-take the GMATPrep exam that you just took. You may see a few repeats but that is not a problem, so long as you take the time to simulate doing the problem so that you don't answer questions you have already seen in like 30 seconds.

You have plenty of time to improve and a few more questions right can make a big difference in your score. You are not far from a 700!

Thanks a lot for the advice. I took another GMATPrep practice test and got a 670 again only this time I got 5 Verbal wrong (44) and 14 quant wrong (38). My verbal seems to be really strong at 44 but I really just need to get that Quant into a decent range of 44+ to break into the 700s. I seem to be getting mostly data sufficiency questions wrong and they tend to be questions in which I chose C or E and the actual answer ended up being the opposite. I have read that the GMATPrep Quant questions tend to be trickier than the MGMAT Quant questions which could explain why I scored a 700 on the MGMAT practice exam and a 670 on the GMATPrep. Do you have any advice as far as the data sufficiency traps go? Have you seen many people jump 30 points from the practice test to the real test? Any words of wisdom before I take the big test? I take the real thing on October 12th, so 10 days. Thanks!
