Medical Students

Medical students in many developing countries are forced to learn their skills in outdated facilities equipped with only the most basic technology. In comparison to their colleagues in the United States, some foreign medical students are hopelessly disadvantaged by their lack of access to state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge treatments being used in the well-funded teaching hospitals of the United States.

The author of the passage above is arguing that

a) the U.S. should encourage more foreign students to study medicine in the U.S.

b) health care in developing countries is not as good as that in the U.S.

c) the availability of advanced technology has led to a disparity in the quality of medical training worldwide

d) in order to promote better health care, the U.S. should send its surplus technology to overseas hospitals

e) U.S. medical schools produce the best-trained doctors in the world

OA to follow, Thanks.

Hi,

a, d and e are definitely out ...

Think it is C as B talks about healthcare (which is not the subject of discussion).

eliminated A,D,E for the same reasons as stated above.

In B, we are talking about health care which is much broader in scope and does not represent the one in the stimulus (medical training technology)

So My Pick C

Please correct me if I'm wrong

can somebody explain :

what type of question it is ?

It is a inference question or conclusion question or reasoning question.
I am unable to categorize the problem.

C is a very general statement, how it can be the answer.

b is looking better to me.

This is a conclusion or main point question which demands the gist of the passage. In other words it is a must be true question which features the conclusion of the stimulus.

B is general for the usage of the word "Health Care" which is very broad in the current sense.

Here we are discussing the problems with the medical "TRAINING" equipment. Because no mention has been made in the stimulus about health care per se, we are not in a position to make a statement on it.

Hope this helps...

The question asks for what the author is arguing. In other words, what's his conclusion or his main point.

So, this is called a main point question. Choice C simply reflects the author's main point.

But note that had the question stem read "which of the following hypotheses is most strongly supported by the information above?", then choice C would still be correct. Choice B is about "healthcare" which is not synonymous with medical equipment used to train medical students. So, choice B is outside the scope. If choice B had discussed "facilities" or "equipment" used in training medical students instead of "healthcare", then choice B would also be correct.

I agree with B, but I feel the language is a bit ambiguous. The answer states "worldwide", but the stimulus states only US and developing country.
